McFaddin family papers, 1840-2005, bulk 1840-1875.

Contains correspondence and legal and financial records of the McFaddin family of Clarendon County, S.C., along with papers of related families and persons including members of the Cunningham and Blakeley families. There is also extensive genealogical information on these families as well as allied families of Godfrey, Harvin, Culbertson, Lewers, and other families, mainly of Laurens and Clarendon counties. McFaddin family correspondence (1850-1936) is mainly that of Joseph Sidney McFaddin (1817-1881) concerning legal and business matters. Letters of the 1850s include a few from J.W. and B.J. West in Alabama, and from the law firm of Fitzpatrick & Starke (Troy, Ala.) to McFaddin in Paxville, S.C. Later letters are addressed to McFaddin in Manning, S.C.A letter (1868) from J.W. Laurence in Morgan, Ga., concerns economic conditions there. Correspondence of the 1870s includes one (1873) from J. Galluchat, Jr. regarding collection of rent from one Isaac Prince. A letter of 1896 addressed to "Mc" (J.S. McFaddin, Jr.?) from J.R.A. Whitlock in Vaucluse, S.C., concerns his plans to attend a medical college in Augusta, Ga. Financial records (ca. 1840-1937), mainly those of Joseph S. McFaddin, include many receipts pertaining to the estate of Mrs. Sarah J. McFaddin (his widow) and his guardianship of his [step-daughter] Sarah J. McFaddin (later Mrs. Pinckney Woods). Also included is a tax receipt (1885) of Mrs. Fannie Julia (Harvin) McFaddin for property at Sammy Swamp in Clarendon County; a receipt (1863) to Jay Minto McFaddin; a list of payments to individuals by the Clarendon Board of Relief (1863); and a bill of sale (1842) for a slave named Abram, sold by Jane Potts of Sumter District to L.B. Davis. One group of legal records and correspondence (1868-1869) pertains to the bankruptcy of John S. McFaddin. Other legal documents include those concerning the guardianship of Sarah J. McFaddin and the estate of James Wise. Another group of documents consists of an agricultural contract (1874) and crop liens (1869-1888). These incude two liens of Benjamin L. Broadway to John S. McFaddin (1869-1870), and a lien (1872) to Samuel John McFaddin of Clarendon County by Watson McFaddin and Thomas Wilson (both of whom signed with their "marks"). Among the miscellaneous items is a small leather pocket book (1859-1866) kept by Jay Minto McFaddin and possibly other family members containing notes on financial transactions, and one entry noting the birth of a foal in 1821. Another notebook (1858-1871?) contains lists of groceries, clothes, and other items, and notes on transactions, such as a loan to E.G. DuBose (1865). Other miscellaneous items include photographs, a scrapbook, and a history (1993) of the Union Baptist Church in Laurens, S.C.A collection of notes, clippings, and ephemera (possibly compiled by Virginia Kirkland Galluchat Orvin) concerns people and places in Clarendon County, especially the town of Manning. There is also a copy of an account entitled "Notes" (1874?) by John Witherspoon Ervin concerning corruption and violence in South Carolina during Reconstruction, the activities of the Ku Klux Klan during that period, and hearings and legislation regarding the Klan. Ervin states that "Congressional Committees were sent South to find or suggest horrible stories, out of which to weave a plot to excite the dying war-frenzy of the North."
